Free Will

Free Will is the concept that human beings are given the ability to make choices that are not predetermined by God. This idea is foundational to many Christian doctrines and is often cited as a crucial aspect of humanity’s relationship with God.

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” This and other verses suggest that humans have the ability to choose between different paths.

This perspective emphasizes predestination and God’s sovereignty, suggesting that God has preordained everything that will happen. However, even within this view, there’s an acknowledgment of human choice, though it’s understood to be within God’s sovereign will.

Free will is closely tied to the concept of moral responsibility in Christianity. If humans are free to make their own choices, they are also responsible for those choices, especially concerning sin and obedience to God.

The concept of free will is significant in discussions of salvation. Many Christians believe that humans must freely accept God’s offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. This acceptance is an act of free will.

Free will is often cited in Christian responses to the problem of evil. The argument is that God allows evil to exist because of free will, meaning that humans have the freedom to choose good or evil, and unfortunately, sometimes choose evil.

It is central to understanding humanity’s moral responsibility, the nature of sin, and the means of salvation.
